Phantom Abyss is an asynchronous multiplayer action-adventure game developed by Team WIBY and published by Devolver Digital. Players are tasked with retrieving sacred relics from procedurally generated temples. These temples are fraught with traps, hidden dangers, and guardian constructs.Gameplay Mechanics:
- Asynchronous Multiplayer: Players embark on their own temple runs. The "phantoms" of other players who have previously attempted the same temple are visible, showcasing their paths, successes, and ultimate failures. This provides strategic insight into potential hazards and optimal routes.
- Procedural Generation: Each temple layout, trap placement, and relic location is unique, ensuring no two runs are identical. This emphasizes adaptability and quick decision-making.
- Perma-death and Limited Attempts: A core mechanic involves losing a temple permanently upon failure. Players have a limited number of attempts (lives) to complete a given temple. Once all lives are exhausted, that specific temple becomes inaccessible for that player.
- Whip as a Primary Tool: The whip serves multiple functions, including combat, traversal (swinging across gaps), and interacting with environmental elements.
- Relic Acquisition: The primary objective is to reach the deepest chambers of each temple to claim its legendary relic.
